A PEDOPHILE who broke into a Brisbane family's home, stripped naked and molested a three-year-old girl and took indecent photographs of the toddler as she slept has received a combined jail term of effectively eight years.

The Brisbane District Court was told Craig Anthony Ellis broke into the family's Aspley home on Brisbane's northside and sexually assaulted the toddler on January 21, 2009.

Ellis, then aged 29, tried to flee when the girl's parents were awoken by their daughter's muffled cries - resulting in the toddler's father crash tackling the naked intruder while the mother struck the pedophile with an ornamental samurai sword.

Judge Michael Rackemann said Ellis' behaviour and abuse of the girl was "very disturbing" and warranted an eight-year term.

In our society, we can sue doctors for making mistakes, rioters can sue policemen if they used excessive force, and even parents can be sued for smacking a naughty child, but it seems NO ONE can sue the Govt for making fucked up laws and creating fucked up offices who do fuck all to protect Society from such violent offenders.

THE family of a young woman strangled by a parolee is still waiting for an apology after a bureaucratic bungle left him at large, free to kill her.

Elsa Corp, a 26-year-old hairdresser, was murdered on her first date with a man she did not know was a violent serial offender on parole.

Her killer, David Patrick Clifford, is one of three parole violators charged with murder after Corrections Victoria caseworkers failed to notify the Parole Board they had committed new offences which could have led to their parole being cancelled.

The reason your house is not regularly robbed is not because you lock your doors. It is because most people don’t steal. Sure, locking is a deterrent used to deter those on the fringes of society, but the main reason you are not attacked on the street, shops are not constantly looted and burnt down, and we all don’t take things that don’t belong to us is because someone, when we were little, taught us the difference between right and wrong.

Put a child in front of an insect and he will take great delight in making it suffer until his mother or father tells him that causing pain is wrong. Children need to be brought up properly with parents who care enough about them to say no, with a school system that cares enough to admit when behaviour is out of control, with a community that recognises that we are ALL responsible for our children.

His fiancée says he was determined not to go back to jail (so he has been in jail) and he has a child with her and another woman. She also has another 2 children from another man. Yet what do Mark Duggan’s parents say? That he was a good father and a respected member of the local community. How can someone with that reputation be considered a respected member of the local community?

These criminals are responsible for their behaviour but so are their parents who sit at home, knowing their children are out there, looking forward to the goodies their children will bring home. I am so angry, so ashamed, so utterly dismayed. The vast majority of these criminals are black. No one will say it. I hang my head in shame, both as a black person and as a teacher.

Our great capital city is on fire and even this isn’t enough to convince people that the excuse-making must stop!

What does the Socialist Workers Party say? “These riots are a bitter reaction to racist policing and a Tory Government destroying people’s lives.” It beggars belief. THE SCARIEST thing about being among the mobs rampaging in London this morning was the unpredictability of what they were doing.

There was no shared rationale driving the thousands of people who milled around the streets, setting fire to cars, looting shops and jousting with hundreds of riot police, and that meant nobody knew what might happen next.

There was no clear political agenda like London's recent G20 protests, and no common motivation like the racial hatred that drove the Los Angeles riots of 1992.

The trouble began on Saturday with the police shooting of a known drug dealer but by 4.30 pm yesterday, when the third day of violence began with a gang attack on a police car in the low-income area of Hackney that initial trigger meant nothing to most of the people wielding sticks and throwing stones.

From what I saw in Hackney the largest contingent were gangs of young men taking the chance to break into stores and vent their resentment of the police. They wore "hoodie" jackets and were often masked.

A small minority were politically-inspired anarchists delighted to have an open fight with "the system." They tended to wear helmets and T-shirts.

Some were middle-aged family people who were simply greedy and selfish enough to loot their local corner store, even though they shop there every day and know the owner.

And quite a few were just idiots adled by drugs, alcohol and boredom who were swept up in the excitement and pranced around inciting strangers to burn, fight or smash a window.

The result was a nervous edge that saw fights break out among fellow looters with no apparent cause, and a constant awareness that at any time things could become deadly.

The burning of stores, cars, buses and dozens of apartments in a dozen parts of London and hundreds of kilometres away in Birmingham and Leeds meant that lives could easily have been lost but this morning there were still no deaths reported among the dozens of hospital casualties.

The drug dealer who was killed last Thursday, Mark Duggan, was black but one of the striking things about these riots is that they have not been the sort of black-against-white affair that tore Los Angeles apart in 1992.

I was in LA for those riots and the stark contrast this time is that just like London's street gangs these mobs have been racially mixed, even though they have been predominantly from ethnic minorities.

And thankfully the London riots have not shown the cold savagery and heavy firepower that left 53 people dead in LA.

At one point, somewhere around 8 pm, I heard somebody in the mob at Hackney yell out "institutional racism" at the line of riot police who were keeping us away from the shopping strip of Clarence Street, Hackney but most of the crowd just seemed intent on getting into those shops.

A parked car had been burning in the street for two hours, and a black cab sat abandoned in the middle of the street, its windows shattered and its bumper bar ripped off but its windscreen wipers still shuttling back and forward.

Police with horses, dogs and helicopters backed up the riot squads and when they confronted the crowd they prevailed.

Families in the surrounding council flats huddled at their windows or peeked out from their front doors, and I saw more than one family in tears at what was happening to their neighbourhood.

All across London ordinary people had locked themselves into their homes. Hundreds of shops and pubs had closed early and the city was strangely quiet apart from police sirens.

A few hours earlier when I had caught a bus in nearby Islington, strangers had been sharing their fears about the chaos and advising each other to get home and stay there.

At 8.40 pm the police guarding Clarence Street suddenly retreated, perhaps fearing a night of escalating clashes, and within two minutes the shops were at the mercy of the crowd.

For some reason the brightly-painted Clarence Street Convenience Store became the target and one of its three metal shutters was pulled away to let in the thieves. At first it was just one 30-something black man who went in to grab some soft drinks to the laughter of the crowd. Then they began queuing up to get inside.

A teenager with an Irish accent meekly said "Oh don't do that! Why steal from the shop?" but by now the crowd was too busy pushing in for a few pounds of loot.

A man in his 60s emerged with five bottles of beer but as he passed a group of watching neighbours he copped an earful from a furious middle-aged mother of African descent.

"You know the woman who owns that store, how can you do this to her?" she screamed at him.

With the store gutted the pack began looking for bigger prizes and a newspaper photographer suddenly ran through the crowd chasing a hefty man who was running off with her camera.

I was with photographer Britta Campion and the equipment around her neck was the most valuable "loot" in sight. Several photographers had already been beaten up and we decided it was too dangerous to keep taking photos of people who were in the middle of committing crimes.

News report : TAXPAYERS are getting "dismal" results from the $3.5 billion a year they spend on Aboriginal Australia, says a damning review of indigenous spending conducted for the federal Department of Finance.

The report points to "a huge gap between policy intent and policy execution", which means the situation of many indigenous Australians today is as bad now as it was in 1970.

"This major investment, maintained over so many years, has yielded dismally poor returns to date," the report says.

The report was obtained by the Seven Network under Freedom of Information laws after a long legal battle in which the department said its release was against the public interest. The Administrative Appeals Tribunal rejected the argument in a landmark ruling that could provide the public with far greater future access to government documents.

Family of Marie Greening Zidan wants her killers named

THE family of a great grandmother bashed to death by two teens say they should be allowed to name the killers to protect future victims.

Marie Greening Zidan, 73, was sexually assaulted, beaten and strangled by two local boys aged 15 and 16 in her Seaford home in 2000.

The two killers are now adults and living anonymously in the community after serving their sentences for manslaughter.

But the Director of Public Prosecutions today asked the Supreme Court to lift a suppression order keeping the killers' identities secret.

The move came after almost a decade of campaigning by Ms Zidan’s daughter, Janine Greening, and her family.

Ms Greening said she feared the killers still posed a risk and had never shown any remorse, taunting their victim’s family and flouting parole conditions.

"It wasn’t just someone stealing a handbag. It was an horrific crime," Ms Greening

"It is about public safety. These two are sex offenders and they are murderers.

"The courts owe to my mother that we as a family can name who did what to my mother.

"It’s been 11 years of complete silence ... these suppression orders have got to go."

Daryl Brown, for the DPP, asked Justice Bernard Bongiorno to lift the order he made on the killers in 2001.

That would then clear the way for Ms Greening to ask the Children’s Court to allow the names to be published.

The Childrens’ Court can allow a child offender to be named under certain circumstances, but can’t do so while there is still a suppression order from another court.

The pair pleaded guilty to manslaughter after a plea deal with struck by prosecutors, with each blaming the other for Ms Zidan’s death.

They were given at least four years jail by Justice Bongiorno but the term was increase to at least six after an appeal by the DPP.

The men’s lawyers told the court the order should stay to allow their rehabilitation to continue.

They argued there was no public interest in the naming of child offenders once they had reached adulthood.

The court was told one of the men had committed further offences, although Ms Greening said outside court the other had also broken parole twice and been arrested for drug trafficking.

One now lives interstate but the other has returned to area where he killed Ms Zidan – forcing his victim’s extended family, who still lived there, to relocate.

Ms Greening, who now advocates for victims’ rights, was supported in court by the relatives of other homicide victims.

Holding the Govt Accountable

The Govt should be held to account when it allows this sort of terrible tragedy to happen.

The Media should also be held to account for not holding the Govt to account for this terrible misdeed. If the Media and the civil libertarian movement can cry out over the execution of criminals like Ronald Ryan - why do they not care about the rape and murder of two innocent and vulnerable women? Do their lives not matter to them?

Ultimately, the blame also falls on Society because it is we who elect the politicians who create the laws, appoint the law makers, the slack judges, the incompetent police chiefs like Christine Nixon, and an emasculated police force filled with women who are physically not strong enough to stop vulnerable crime.

The tragedy is not just a once off event. Its indicative of the corruption in our legal system which would bend over backwards to help scum like Watkins but not lift a finger to help the vulnerable.

Whenever they get into power, they always fuck up the economy, the society, and leave a fucking enormous debt for the next govt to fix.

This is without exception in both the State and Federal levels -from the 1960s until today. I heard that Labor used to be at least competent before the 1960s but apparently all the pot smokers got in and fucked it up.

Why do people vote for Labor? They don't support the workers - they allow in cheap imports, they don't protect Australian industry - in fact they do just the opposite. They just practically destroyed overnight the Cattle Trade industry worth 5 billion dollars. All the farm workers whose lives depend on that industry are fucked like a drunk white girl in house filled with men of Middle Eastern appearance.

Remember the Pink Batts scheme - home insulation fiasco. Overnight the stupid Labor govt shut it down when they couldn't manage it properly and a dozen homes got burnt down and Australian children burnt it death. Then the good insulation companies who had bought stock for the business got fucked because the Govt shut down the grants.

BER - otherwise known as the Builder Early Retirement scheme. Wow, what a fuck up that was.
The two biggest states lost $3 billion dollars somewhere in that scheme.

In other words they built garden sheds and classified them as gyms and overcharged the State Govt for them who happily pay for the union approved contractors. Yeah, there is NO corruption there my arse.

Those states were Victoria and NSW. And they were the biggest in terms of fuckwits living inside because they voted for Labor for over 10+ years despite their incompetency.

Victoria is fucking stupid. The State Labor Govt earns over $400 million dollars a year. Yes, a year through dodgy speed cameras. The speed cameras are not calibrated properly and move when vehicles pass on them - resulting in incorrect results. Thousands of Victorians have lost their licenses, their jobs, and a great deal of cash as a result of these errors. But yet, they vote for Labor. I call them fucking stupid.

And what of the desalination plants? Very useful with all that rain we are getting now. Who were the fucking scientists who dreamed that up? And why are they still in power?

Why didn't we build more dams?

Now the thing that gets me is that the people of Australia seem to have a soft spot for Labor.

I finally got some free time to watch the news and I'm really impressed with the cleanup work that's going on in Queensland.

People there are just lining up in the thousands to help with the cleanup work.

Wow.

Instead of looting, raping, and murders like we often see in other parts of the world (ie Haiti), we see total strangers helping to clear out the rubbish caused by the floods in OUR PEOPLE'S homes and shops FOR FREE.

They're just going out there, volunteering their services, and doing their bit to clean up their State. You buggers are total heroes.

This sort of altruism is really amazing.

The seven males, aged between 14 and 21 came to Australia as refugees from Sudan or Afghanistan.

They have each been charged with 17 offences, including rape and assault.

Detective Senior Constable Christopher Reed of the sexual crimes squad said the alleged victim, who lives locally, left her children with a babysitter while she went with a friend to two Bendigo clubs, the HuHa Club and the Star Bar. As she was leaving the Star Bar at about 2am, she met a 16-year-old girl, who introduced her to the group. The men then came back to the woman's house, joining the 16-year-old girl and the babysitter there.

Constable Reed said the victim began to feel unsafe when Mr Gar became aggressive, putting his arms around the victim.

A video recorded on one of the men's mobile phones shows the victim being grabbed in her kitchen, with the 16-year-old trying to pull her into the laundry. "She can be clearly heard saying no," Constable Reed said.

The footage shows the 16-year-old and 14-year-old persisting in trying to shepherd the woman into the laundry while she pushes them away.

Mr Gar allegedly lifted the victim's skirt and pulled her underwear down while she tried to kick him away. Constable Reed said the group was laughing while Mr Gar digitally raped the woman.

She was then taken into the laundry where Mr El Nour and the 16-year-old allegedly held her down while Mr Manon and the 17-year-old raped her. The 16-year-old is also accused of slapping her and digital rape.

Detective Reed said the woman's screams could be heard from outside the laundry.

The alleged gang rapist's lawyer told police his friends and the victim were "having a little wrestle" and "grabbing each other like a porno", and she was not really fighting back, but "more like a play".

Constable Reed said the victim was "extremely fearful" for her safety and her children if the men received bail.

Bail was granted for Mr Gar, Mr El Nour and Mr Manon, while the 17-year-old, 14-year-old and Mr Zaoli have been remanded to appear again next week.

The victim of the rape two years ago was a 30-year-old nurse, and she condemned the six-year term the rapist received, and the judge's recommendation that he be eligible for immediate parole.

Dennis William Kris, 26, pleaded guilty in the Cairns District Court on Monday to rape, unlawfully entering a dwelling to commit an indictable offence and unlawfully entering a dwelling at night with intent.

Judge William Everson sentenced Kris to six years' jail on the first count, and three years and one year on the other two, to be served concurrently, but ordered that as Kris had spent 785 days in pre-sentence custody, he could apply for immediate parole.

"And what message does this send to the thousands of young women who work in remote parts of Australia -- that they can have their quarters broken into and they can be violently raped and the perpetrator gets off after serving less than three years in a remand prison," he said.

"Has he been rehabilitated? The prosecutor told the judge on Monday that he had even re-offended while on bail for this charge."

THE grieving father of two murdered sisters says William John Watkins should never have been free to kill.

Allan Irwin yesterday lashed out at the justice system for allowing the convicted rapist and thug out of prison.
"The system definitely contributed to the passing of my girls," Mr Irwin said.

"It's a joke. When some clown does it again and does it again, what are they waiting for to realise he's not suitable to be in society?"

Colleen Irwin, 23, and sister Laura, 21, were stabbed to death in their Altona North home.

Watkins, 38, who was shot dead almost 5000km from the crime scene in Western Australia on Tuesday, had convictions for rape, intentionally causing serious injury, aggravated burglary, assaulting police and theft.

He was a suspect early in the investigation. Blood found in his apartment on Monday was later matched with the sisters' DNA.

Mr Irwin yesterday led condemnation at what he described as repeated lenient sentences for Watkins.

"All these clowns should have tattoos on their forehead for whatever they do. I'm talking about a cattle-brand tattoo," he said.

In May, 2000, Judge Bill White sentenced Watkins to a minimum of two years' jail and maximum of four years and three months for raping a woman in her home in November 1999.

Two months later, Watkins was jailed for a year for bashing a blind pensioner as she lay in her bed in January 1998.

It is understood Watkins had seven previous court appearances, none resulting in jail.

Marg D'Arcy, program manager of women's health at the Royal Women's Hospital and Centre Against Sexual Assault, said rehabilitation of a rapist was not possible in just two years.

Ms D'Arcy said it seemed fair to predict Watkins would have been violent to women again.

"If the sentence had have reflected the danger he posed, he probably wouldn't be on the streets," she said.

A police source said violent criminals like Watkins were often given far too many chances.

"It's pathetic," the source said. "He obviously didn't learn from his mistakes."

The officer said such sentences served as a deterrent to rape victims going though the trauma of reporting the crime and giving evidence.

(Which is what I guess what Bracks/Nixon want - if rape victims don't report on crime, then their precious statistics will show that crime is down, success!!)

Police Assistant Commissioner Simon Overland wouldn't comment when asked his view on Watkins' rape sentence.

A spokeswoman for Victorian Attorney-General Rob Hulls said he could not comment on individual cases.

Opposition Attorney-General Andrew McIntosh said the Liberals recommended last year that rapists be included in the Serious Sex Offenders Monitoring Bill.

Mr McIntosh said such a Bill would ensure criminals like Watkins were more closely monitored.

"What other Mr Watkins are out there?" he asked.

A doctor's report to the court in the rape case said Watkins' offences were impulsive and his criminal sexual activity "was opportunistic and certainly not planned".

The doctor's report said Watkins, who had a history of alcohol abuse, posed a low to moderate risk to the community.

Judge Bill White yesterday declined to comment on his sentence.

County Court Chief Judge Michael Rozenes also declined to speak.

I'm listening to the debate about drug addicts who are being offered cash if they get sterilized. And the only thing I'm wondering here is where is the common sense.

You've got a bunch of bleeding hearts who are waffling on about their utopians ideals, and who probably have never seen a drug addict unless they are looking at the mirror.

And on the other hand, you have people who see the problem and want to fix it and have a simple solution.

But whats the problem.

The problem is that drug addicts have kids, and can't handle themselves, let alone the needs of a child.

The bleeding hearts want to throw money at the problem. But it doesn't work. Because the druggies use the cash to buy more dope, alcohol etc.. and use their kids as welfare cheque machines.

The kids suffer - and often die.

Taking of these problems consumes a lot of time and money - yes, your tax payer money which could be used to help disabled kids, widows, orphans, and even yes, drug addicts.

Since cash is not a finite resource - unless its someone else's cash;. try asking a lefty to pay a hefty tax out of his own pocket - a solution needs to be found.

If it was up to me, I'd just place the drug users and all people who support them in one island - give them free drugs, problem solved. Everyone's happy.

But since I'm not king... wouldn't the simple solution - simply be to offer the drug addicts an incentive not to have kids?

Give them cash - if they choose to be sterilized or to have a contraceptive device?

I was reading this article. Its about this 7 foot fellah 120kg who killed his 5 foot girlfriend 50kg, stabbing her in the back and smashing her head - and apparently screaming out that she deserved it. The jury acquitted him because he claimed self-defense.

And now people want the law for self-defense to be changed.

IT WOULD be discriminatory to deny a man who killed his estranged wife the right to drive a taxi in Melbourne, the Victorian Equal Opportunity and Human Rights Commission has argued.

The man, who can only be identified as ''XFJ'', stabbed his wife to death in 1990, and was later found not guilty of murder by a jury on the grounds of insanity.

XFJ's barrister, Paul Bingham, yesterday told the Supreme Court that there was ''a limit on what the public have a right to expect'' when they caught a taxi.

''They have a right to expect safe … and efficient taxi cabs but not the right to expect they will sit next to a person who is like them.''

(WTF? Don't people have a right not to sit in a taxi cab driven by a psycho who killed his wife? What kind of crazy wanky logic did PB dream that out of?)

Mr Bingham said his client, a 52-year-old African refugee, was rehabilitated and the killing occurred almost 20 years ago.

Last year, the state Director of Public Transport rejected XFJ's application for a taxi driver's licence, but the decision was overruled on appeal to the Victorian Civil and Administrative Tribunal.

VCAT ruled that because XFJ was not convicted of murder, he was still eligible to drive a taxi.

The costs of the trial are being entirely funded by Victorian taxpayers, with the transport department paying XFJ's legal bills.

Counsel representing the Equal Opportunity and Human Rights Commission told the court yesterday that the case was ''about discrimination against a person with a mental illness''.

A MAN harassed by anti-war mail after his son was killed in Afghanistan says immigrants who can't adapt to Australian life and values should live elsewhere.

Private Gregory Michael Sher, 30, was killed in a rocket attack in Oruzgan Province, in southern Afghanistan, in January.

He was the eighth Australian Defence Force soldier to be killed in Afghanistan since 2002, but the first to die as a result of indirect fire.

Mr Sher's father Felix received a phone call and letters, allegedly from self-styled Muslim cleric Sheikh Haron, just before his son's funeral.

"I feel bad that you have lost your son but I don't feel bad that a murderer of innocent civilians has lost his life,'' a line in one of the letters reportedly said.

Other Australian families of men killed in Afghanistan have allegedly received similar letters in the past two years.

LAWYERS in the ACT have fiercely resisted moves to toughen the territory's murder laws, which have not resulted in a single conviction for more than a decade.

Peak legal bodies yesterday accused the Stanhope government of putting politics ahead of good policy over its attempt to change the definition of murder to bring it in line with the rest of the country.

The proposed changes, which have been supported by ACT Policing, will mean an accused who intends to seriously harm a person but not kill them can still be convicted of murder if the victim dies.

It follows several high-profile cases that prompted community outrage after the accused were convicted of manslaughter but not murder.

Last year, Glen Porritt was convicted of manslaughter after stabbing his mother, Nanette Porritt, 57 times.

ACT Chief Justice Terence Higgins ruled that Porritt, who suffered from Asperger's disorder, could not be guilty of murder because the prosecution did not prove he intended to kill his mother.

He was imprisoned for 22 months.

Also last year, 43-year-old Darren Lee Cassidy was convicted of manslaughter after he bashed his girlfriend's four-year-old daughter to death with a saucepan, walking stick and tent pole.

Chief Justice Higgins ruled Cassidy did not intend to kill but did intend to harm the girl.

In a submission to the territory government, ACT Policing argued that both Porritt and Cassidy could have been found guilty of murder if the legal changes introduced in December were in place.

Appearing before an inquiry into the changes, Commander Kevin Zuccato, from ACT Policing, said the narrowness of the current laws was to blame for the lack of murder convictions since 1998. He also said sentences in the ACT were too lenient and not in line with community expectations.

The Australian Security Intelligence Organisation said in late March it had no information relating to Ms Liu that would give rise to any security concern regarding her activities or associations.

According to people involved in the pro-democracy groups in Sydney in the late 1980s and early 1990s, Ms Liu was active in anti-Beijing protests after the 1989 Tiananmen massacre.

She disappeared from Sydney's Chinese dissident scene a few months later. When she reappeared in Sydney in the early 1990s, she suddenly had access to large sums of money, began amassing a multimillion-dollar property portfolio and started courting Australian political figures.

In 1993, she paid for Mr Fitzgibbon and his father, federal Labor MP Eric Fitzgibbon, to travel first class to China to attend the opening of a hotel development. Joel Fitzgibbon was not an MP at the time but was expected to succeed his father as the federal member for Hunter in NSW.

Ms Liu has strong ties with senior Chinese Communist Party figures and has had considerable support from the Chinese Government-controlled Bank of China.

Between 1995 and 2007, her companies donated $40,000 to Mr Fitzgibbon's election campaign and another $50,000 to the NSW ALP.

When details of the covert probe into his relationship with Ms Liu broke in March, Mr Fitzgibbon came close to losing his job when he admitted he had failed to declare she had paid for trips to China in2002 and 2005.

He had also misled the public when he denied receiving large gifts or travel from Ms Liu.

Ms Liu, who is believed to be living in China, has strongly denied any assertions she has been an intelligence operative of the Chinese Government, despite being praised by pro-Beijing groups for accurately transferring information about Australian politics and policies to Chinese ministries.

The officials said concerns about a potential security risk relating to Mr Fitzgibbon were dismissed.

"Some of the information about the minister was circulating around the department, and I don't think we were the only people looking at it, but some things involved a bit of research," the official said. "There were limits to what we could do and we didn't get all of the story, but what has come out later about Fitzgibbon's failure to declare trips to China only strengthened the concerns.

Brad Jones, 46, the father of Nathan Jones, sustained a broken nose and cracked ribs when he was attacked by Collingwood supporters outside the MCG on Saturday. Police have charged three men over the incident and expect to charge others.

Premier John Brumby said the Government would meet the main sporting bodies, as well as ground managers and health experts, in a bid to stamp out bad behaviour.

THE federal Attorney-General, Robert McClelland, supplied a glowing character reference for a Sydney sheik accused of spying for Iran just months after learning ASIO had rejected his residency application on national security grounds.

The Australian can reveal that Mr McClelland wrote two character references in 1997 for controversial Iranian cleric Mansour Leghaei, who is accused by ASIO of engaging in "specific acts of foreign interference".

Sheik Leghaei has been fighting to stay in Australia for more than a decade, despite ASIO issuing two adverse security assessments against him. However, The Australian has been told the assessment may be reviewed, a move that would pave the way for a fresh visa.

When he was appointed Attorney-General in 2007, Mr McClelland said he disclosed the first reference written on Sheik Leghaei's behalf to the "relevant agencies" within his portfolio. But he has refused to say whether he disclosed the second reference, in which he expressed "surprise" at ASIO's findings and vouched for Sheik Leghaei's good character.

Mr McClelland's second reference is likely to become an issue for him if ASIO, which falls under his portfolio, is required to review its assessment of Sheik Leghaei.

Mr McClelland wrote a reference for the sheik in support of his application in April 1997, a fact already on the public record. But in December, three months after Sheik Leghaei was told he was considered a risk to national security, Mr McClelland wrote a second reference in support of his appeal.

That reference, obtained by The Australian, showed Mr McClelland appeared to be fully aware of the security concerns surrounding Sheik Leghaei.

Mr McClelland, then an opposition backbencher, described the sheik as an asset to the Australian and Muslim communities.

"I was most surprised to learn that Sheik Leghaei's application had been rejected on the failure to satisfy part 4002 of Schedule 4 of the Migration Regulations, that is the public interest criteria," Mr McClelland wrote.

Part 4002 of the regulations requires that an applicant "is not assessed" by ASIO to be directly or indirectly a risk to security.

Mr McClelland goes on to describe the sheik as "an erudite man, conciliatory in tone and demeanour" who would be an "asset" to both the Muslim and Australian communities.

Mr McClelland also met a backer of Sheik Leghaei, David Smith, a local Anglican priest, soon after the ALP took office in November 2007.

Mr McClelland's benign assessment of the sheik is in stark contrast to that of ASIO which has twice issued adverse security assessments against him, once in 2002 and then again in 2004.

It is understood ASIO's concerns about Sheik Leghaei relate to his alleged knowledge of Ahlul-Bait, a French terrorist organisation and his alleged connection to Iran.

A booklet confiscated in 1995 as he was returning from Iran to Australia, which discusses at length aspects of jihad and the importance of intelligence gathering, was also of concern.

Sheik Leghaei has disputed the translation.

In 2006, then director general of ASIO Denis Richardson said Sheik Leghaei was assessed to have engaged in "acts of foreign interference", defined as spying or intimidating dissidents.

Inspector General for Intelligence and Security Ian Carnell backed ASIO's assessment saying the agency had "sufficient ground" to make its finding.

A Jordanian court on Tuesday halved the jail term of a 29-year-old Jordanian man who shot dead his raped sister 12 times "in the name of honour", a judicial official said.

The criminal court initially sentenced the man to 15 years with hard labour for killing his sister in 2008 in Mowaqqar, southeast of the capital Amman, but immediately reduced it to seven-and-a-half years.

"Police kept the woman in custody for protection and later handed her over to the family, but the brother shot her 12 times in different parts of her body once she arrived home, killing her immediately."

The man told police that he committed the crime "in the name of honour", according to the official.

It was not immediately clear whether police ever caught the rapist.

Murder is punishable by the death penalty in Jordan, but in the case of so-called "honour killings", a court usually commutes or reduces sentences, particularly if the victim's family urges leniency.

Between 15 and 20 women are murdered each year in Jordan in the name of "honour". Last year, around 17 such killings were recorded.

Parliament has refused to reform the penal code to ensure harsher penalties.

A FATHER who bashed a man caught molesting his son, 10, is facing a prison sentence, while the boy's attacker walks free.

In a highly unusual case, Shane Thomas Davidson was spared jail despite pleading guilty to molesting the boy on State Of Origin night last year.

Judge Ian Dearden told Beenleigh District Court the sentence was reduced because the young victim's father had wrongly taken action into his own hands and badly beaten Davidson.

"There is no place in our community for a vigilante approach," he said.

Davidson was sentenced on Monday to a nine-month intensive corrections order.

Today, the father's brother told Radio 4BC's Greg Carey that his sibling snapped after the boy repeated his claim that he had been molested to his mother and then to friends from across the street.

He said he arrived at the scene to discover "my brother in handcuffs sitting in the back of a police car".

He said it was up to the public to decided whether the pedophile had suffered enough for his crime.

The brother said the pedophile's abuse of his nephew had "absolutely put a wedge in all of our hearts".

Child safety campaigner Hetty Johnston yesterday slammed the sentence for Davidson.

"In this case, they've got it woefully wrong," she said. "What the offender did was totally unnatural."

In handing down his sentence on Monday, Justice Dearden said adult offenders who committed sex offences against children must serve actual jail time – unless exceptional circumstances were found to exist.

"This is one of those rare and exceptional cases," he said. "When an individual takes the matter of punishment into their own hands, the offence committed by the person may be far, far more serious and, therefore, have far more serious consequences then the original offence."

The court was told Davidson was at the child's house at Eagleby in June last year to watch the State of Origin match with the boy's father and a few other people.

After the game, Davidson went into the boy's bedroom and began massaging the child's penis under his clothes.

When the boy woke up, Davidson asked the boy to show him his penis and offered to do the same.

The child refused and went to tell his father what happened.

The man then attacked Davidson, dragging him outside, throwing him on to a concrete path where he struck his head and repeatedly kicking him.

Davidson later underwent extensive facial surgery in the Princess Alexandra Hospital.

The man spent three years of a five-year sentence in jail for the racial killing of a teenager.

According to VCAT Victorian Civil and Administrative Tribunal judge Marilyn Harbison in 1995, the man was drinking with a group in Frankston who mistook a family out for ice cream for a rival ethnic gang. And so they attacked a family who was eating icecream and killed their son.

However, Marilyn reckons thats really cool and should not pose a problem for the man to work with children. Yup, no problems. Nothing to see here.

Sorry all for not posting. I've been busy with work. had to do an overseas trip - to Singapore. Great place- they hang drug pushers there and Gangsters get thrown into jail with no trial.

Anyways, today is Easter Friday. The day when Jesus got crucified for our sins. So let me talk about that today.

Back in Jesus' day, thousands if not millions of people got crucified, tortured and died horrible deaths.

So why bother celebrating the life of one man?

Why?

Because Jesus was God. In the Bible - he's written as the Son of God. This sometimes causes confusion for people - esp. feminists.

In one way - just to mess with your head - you could say God gave birth to God - "begotten not made".

To make it easy for ya - God is like water. Now water can be in three parts.

1. Liquid ... water

2. Solid ... ice

3. Vapour... steam

All three have unique characteristics. But they are all ultimately H2O.

Same thing with God. Jesus Christ is God in human form.

In a certain way, God's relationships with us is like that of an author or reader to his book. The author/ reader knows how its all going to turn out.

But perhaps just to make it a bit more exciting He gave us freewill. So we can choose good or evil. In the beginning humans were flawless like God. But we fucked up. And there's no way back to God. We can't.

How Christianity differs from all other religions is thus:

It states that humans are all fucked up. They have as much energy to redeem themselves to God's holy level as shit turning itself into Gold.

God is holy in the same way as a blank white piece of paper is 100% white.

Now if we fuck up - and we all do - our piece of paper gets patches of black crap on it.

If its dirty you flush it down the drain. Doesn't matter whether its small or big stains. Its still not 100%.

So how do you make it clean? You can't.

Christianity unlike other religions - states this certain fact - You can't make yourself Holy. That's like shit trying to turn itself into gold.

The only way God solved this terrible problem is to allow His own self - made manifest in a human body - ie Jesus Christ - to take our place in judgment. In other words, He sacrificed himself for our sake.

In other words Jesus paid for our sins by his death.

(I don't have the time to explain this whole theological process... maybe some other time if you're interested).

So Jesus got flushed down the toilet. Jesus got killed instead of us. He went to Hell.

Now think about this for awhile. Jesus is God. By getting killed for us - he got sent to hell.

In other words - God got split apart. One part of Him died in a moment of time.

Its said that God stands outside of time in the same way as a writer/reader of a book can walk away from the book - and go back and forth from beginning to end. Think about that for a moment on the magnitude of what God did.

I hope I'm not confusing you... so lets move on.

Anyways what does that have to do with me?

Simple. God wants you to be reconciled with him. That's why Jesus died on the cross.

This might be a lot for you to digest and take it all in. But if you're still interested I want to maybe say a small prayer and ask Jesus to help you to understand Him more. You can tell Him anything. Doesn't have to be fancy. You just can't come to God with a proud or arrogant attitude. If there's anything God can't stand - its some smug, stuck up idiot who thinks he knows it all.

Than may I suggest you go get a Bible (thats in normal English, unless you plan to learn ancient Hebrew and Greek and read the original Bible text). Read one of the Gospels (accounts of Jesus' life) - and start from there.

I find that when I'm down - I read from the Psalms (thats in the middle of the Bible).

One thing you gotta remember when you're reading the Bible - its an account of humans interacting with God. The people mentioned in the Bible - usually are a bunch of absolute losers - they really are. Read the story of Jonah. But whats unusual is that God gave them mercy and grace and helped them - despite the fact that they are a bunch of tossers.

If anything, that's the central theme of Christianity - that God loved humanity so much that He gave His only begotten Son - that whoever believes in Him shall find eternal life.

(And I'm not talking about dancing around in Heaven carrying harps - but being in the presence of an almighty Holy God and talking with Him as you would a friend)

CONTROLLED burning would be declared a key national threat to biodiversity under a new proposal before government that has been slammed as dangerous to life and property.

While Environment Minister Peter Garrett yesterday gave Victoria carte blanche to do all it needed to control its deadly bushfires, without review by federal environment laws, it emerged he will be asked next year to decide whether prescribed burning to reduce fuel loads puts plants and animals at risk.

A Department of Environment spokeswoman confirmed yesterday it had received a public submission to list controlled burning as a "key threatening process" - the same category that applies to climate change, land clearing and feral cats, pigs and foxes.

"This recommendation is due by late 2010," she said.

Victoria's bushfire tragedy has focused attention on the management of its state forests, national parks and other Crown land, which make up a third of the state but contributed four-fifths of the fires started since Australia Day.

Among councils to resist controlled burning was the Yarra Ranges Shire, which was hit heavily by the Black Saturday bushfire disaster.

In a document from 2007, its emergency resource officer said there was too little known about its effect on flora and fauna and called for "rigorous" environmental assessment of prescribed burning, taking account of species' breeding seasons and the Leadbeater's possum zone.

"The Shire of Yarra Ranges has not undertaken prescribed burning on public land under its control for a number of years," the document said, citing a lack of expertise and the risk of lawsuits.

David Packham, a former supervising meteorologist for fire weather nationwide at the Bureau of Meteorology, accused environmentalists of behaving like "eco-terrorists waging a jihad" against prescribed burning.

"The green movement is directly responsible for the severity of these fires through their opposition to prescribed burning," Mr Packham said.

The federal Environment Department's spokeswoman declined to name the applicant behind the proposal to list controlled burning as a "key threatening process".

But bushfire consultant Chris Muller, a former fire officer with the Victorian and West Australian governments, said the proposal would make it even harder to carry out precautionary burn-offs to reduce fuel loads in forests.

"I am appalled that Minister Garrett would even contemplate an action that would remove or restrict the use of the only effective large bushfire mitigation tool -- prescribed burning," he said.

"The inevitable consequences of such action are disasters on the scale of that currently experienced in Victoria."

Victoria already lists "inappropriate fire regimes" and "high frequency fires" as potential threats to the environment, which Mr Muller said reflected attempts to limit controlled burning.

Yesterday, Mr Garrett granted the Victorian Government an indefinite emergency exemption to take "any actions required" to respond to the bushfire crisis without waiting for approval by federal environment authorities.

His department's spokeswoman said, however, Victoria did not normally need federal sign-off for firebreaks or controlled burns.

"Victoria has environmental management plans approved by the Department of Environment, Heritage, Water and the Arts that protect the environment and ensure that federal environmental approval processes do not get in the way of effective fire management in Victoria," she said.

"Indeed, they include a provision that in an emergency, protection of life and property would be paramount."

The spokeswoman said the application to list prescribed burning as a threatening process would undergo "rigorous scientific evaluation" by an expert panel as well as public consultation before it went to Mr Garrett for a decision.

And hard questions will be asked of Victoria's Department of Sustainability and Environment (DSE) about whether it has done enough to manage the state's forests.

Tinder-dry forests were consumed with a fury few people have witnessed before, and many people are angry there was so much fuel to burn.

As nervous Yarra Valley residents watched smoke rise from a fire on Mount Riddell outside Healesville, they placed at least some of the blame at the feet of the "greenies".

"I don't know if it's the DSE's fault," said Badger Creek resident John Hurren.

"It's the greenies' fault for letting all the forests grow up and not letting the Government clear it."

A Healesville woman, who wished to remain anonymous, said she had first-hand experience of the problem.

"I used to work with Melbourne Water back in 2002, and we wanted to clear away a lot of the fuel," she said.

"During winter when the leaves fell and you could get in and see the fuel, all we could do was bulldoze the leaves and fuel down off the side of the road.

"We wanted to clear the leaves and get rid of the forests, but the greenies think because it's on the ground it should stay."

Victoria may have faced the worst bushfire conditions in its history over the weekend. High temperatures, strong winds and low humidity produced tinder-box conditions.

But in months to come, it may emerge that more aggressive forest clearing policy could have saved lives.

Update: The DSE has defended its forest management policy, while the Wilderness Society says it is too early to be having a debate about the issue.

One of the biggest furphies in the supercharged debate in the wake of Victoria's bushfires is the claim by green groups that they are great supporters of hazard reduction burning.

Also known as prescribed burning, this reduc(es) surface fuel loads.

This reduction of fuel loads is expensive, but... it has been proven to reduce the power and intensity of fire. Every bushfire inquiry since the 1939 Stretton royal commission has recommended increased prescribed burning to mitigate the effects of inevitable wildfire.

...(G)reen groups have long opposed such systematic prescribed burning, as is evident in their submissions to bushfire inquiries from as far back as 1992. They complain of a threat to biodiversity, including to fungi, from "frequent burning" regimes and urge resources be spent on water bombers and early detection, as well as on stopping climate change.. (as well as fucking up the lives of loggers and forestry workers).

Yet last week, Jonathan La Nauze of Friends of the Earth, Melbourne, in a letter to this newspaper claimed: "…not one Australian environmental organisation is opposed to prescribed burning … Environment groups are engaged in a sophisticated debate about where and how prescribed burning can be most effective."

(However...) the Wilderness Society, was singing from a different song sheet: ""Experience and risk analysis show that repeatedly burning tens of thousands of hectares of remote bushland and forest will do little to address the threat of bushfires to human communities … It would be a huge mistake if the community was led to believe that a massive, expensive and environmentally destructive prescribed burning program was going to protect them when it could make matters worse." Robertson is no lone ranger among greens in opposition to prescribed burning.

The WA Forest Alliance, for instance, lodged a submission to the NSW parliamentary inquiry into the 2001-02 bushfires, claiming: "Frequent fires have a disastrous effect on many species of flora and fauna and their habitat structure." WWF Australia's submission claimed: "Inappropriate fire hazard regimes can damage biodiversity leading to the loss of native species, communities and ecosystems."

The NSW Greens state on their website as part of their bushfire risk management policy: "There is an urgent need to correct the common misconception that responsible fire management always involves burning or clearing to reduce moderate and high fuel loads…"

In 2003, lightning strikes in fuel-rich national parks in NSW and the ACT sparked bushfires which swept into Canberra, killing four people.

Days later, the NSW Nature Conservation Council's then chairman, Rob Pallin, described calls for increased prescribed burning as "futile" and a "knee-jerk reaction". "People who claim that hazard reduction burning is a cure-all for bushfire risk are either fooling themselves or deliberately trying to fool the public."

It is another clever tactic of those who oppose broadscale prescribed burning to claim that it is not a "cure-all" for bushfire risk. No one has ever claimed it is.

(W)ildfires will occur, but prescribed burning reduces the intensity of a fire burning "under any set of meteorological conditions", and it reduces the spread of the fire, allowing firefighters to construct effective control lines.

And yet there have been recent moves to have controlled burning listed as a "key threatening process" under the Environmental Protection and Biodiversity Conservation Act. Such a submission has reportedly been received by the Threatened Species Scientific Committee.

In NSW, already, the Department of Environment and Conservation has listed "too frequent fire" as a "key threatening process to biodiversity".

But the real threatening process is the holocaust we have just seen in Victoria.

Last week angry fire survivors in Victoria pointed the finger at local authorities who prevented clearing of vegetation. At a public meeting in Arthurs Creek, Warwick Spooner, who lost his mother and brother in the Strathewen fire, stood up criticise the Nillumbik council.

"We've lost two people in my family because you dickheads won't cut trees down." Then of course, there is Liam Sheahan, the Reedy Creek home owner whose house is the only one in a two-kilometre area which survived the fires. In 2004 he was fined $50,000 for removing 247 trees around his hilltop house to protect it from fire. His two-year court battle against the Mitchell Shire Council cost him $50,000 in legal fees.

It is a rich irony that Slidders Lawyers last week launched a class action on behalf of fire victims at Kinglake, against the Singapore-owned electricity company SP AusNet, alleging the fire was caused by a fallen power line.

After all, it was only in 2001 that Transgrid bulldozed a 60-metre wide firebreak under its high-voltage lines in the Snowy Mountains. For that it was prosecuted by four government agencies, blasted for "environmental vandalism" by the then NSW premier Bob Carr, and fined $500,000.

Two years later, during the disastrous firestorm that engulfed the mountains, the offending firebreak became the only safe haven for kangaroos and workers constructing a fire trail. The sad truth of such holocausts is that the environmental toll ends up worse than the most vigorous prescribed burning regime ever could be.

And how do the Greenies plan to fix things - LIE LIE LIE. And pray that the whole mess will get blown away so they can get around to fucking up things again. FUCKING GREENIES. FUCKING LIARS.

But seven years after the Sheahans bulldozed trees to make a fire break — an act that got them dragged before a magistrate and penalised — they feel vindicated. Their house is one of the few in Reedy Creek still standing.

The Sheahans' 2004 court battle with the Mitchell Shire Council for illegally clearing trees to guard against fire, as well as their decision to stay at home and battle the weekend blaze, encapsulate two of the biggest issues arising from the bushfire tragedy.

Mr Sheahan said he wanted others to learn from his experience and offered an invitation for Government ministers to visit his property.

Melbourne University bushfire expert Kevin Tolhurst gave evidence to help the Sheahan family in their legal battle with the council.

"Their fight went over nearly two years. The Sheahans were victimised. It wasn't morally right," he said yesterday.

Dr Tolhurst told the Seymour Magistrates court that Mr Sheahan's clearing of the trees had reduced the fire risk to his house from extreme to moderate.

"That their house is still standing is some natural justice for the Sheahans," he said.

He said council vegetation management rules required re-writing. He also called on the State Government to provide clearer guidelines about when families should stay and defend their property.

He would also like his convictions overturned and fines repaid.

"It would go a long way to making us feel better about the system. But I don't think it will happen."

I don't know what it is with greenies. I mean I like trees. I think they're beautiful. I got angry at my apartment body corp in Asia for mutilating a dozen tall African Plain trees we had in the carpark. (In case you're wondering, the British planted them there during the colonial period). But hey, my place in Asia doesn't suffer from the regular threat of bushfires.

Living here in Vic, close to St Andrews, I used to drive up there on Saturday for the Sat market and buy honey off a guy called Hellmet. Saw him on Channel 7 news today; poor fucker lost everything.

To me - it seems to make sense to allow logging, vigorous backburning in our native forests. Cut down the gum trees lining the roads. FFS, they keep falling down and causing car crashes.

I used to have a lot of gum trees in my garden. I chopped them all down. Didn't ask for the fucking Council's permission. If its my life or some dickless council's say so, hell, I'll protect my life and my family's life any fucking day. If you try and do the right thing - ask the motherfuckers' for permission, and the dickless wonders will masturbate on their red tape for eternity before they give you satisfaction. As far as they are concerned- its their stupid Green ideology over human life.

(Having said that, I'm quite happy to see the Sea Shepherd take down the Japanese Whaling Fleet. I mean who gets hurt there?)

But when you have houses in massive gum tree vegetation - which anyone with half-a-brain knows is highly flammable -you gotta clear the fuckers. Fuck the Koalas mate. Take no chances - cut even the old growth trees down if you have to. They were afterall made to be burnt. And burn they do - very readily. Their ecology is designed for bushfires. Many of their seeds require fire for them to germinate. Its just science.

What caused temperatures in Britain to allow vineyards during Roman times... Why was Greenland once green in ancient times? Its just part of a natural cycle.

(Having said that, yes I think we should invest in renewable energy and better housing. Israel requires all its home to have solar panels. One of my Hungarian friends was appalled by the poor construction of Aussie homes. Poor insulation etc.. Sure, blame labor costs. But whose fault is that - when we have a giant pool of cheap labor sitting up North. Why can't we invest in stuff like mud brick housing? And lower the cost of housing and road infrastructure by employing foreign labor? If the Union fuckers want to jerk around and collect their dole cheques - fuck them.)

Council ignored warning over trees before Victoria bushfires

THE shire council covering some of the areas hit hardest by the bushfires was warned five years ago that its policy of encouraging people to grow trees near their homes to give the appearance of a forest would lead to disaster.

One of Australia's leading bushfire experts, Rod Incoll, warned Nillumbik Shire Council in a 2003 report that it risked devastation if it went ahead with changes to planning laws proposed by green groups that restricted the removal of vegetation.

Mr Incoll, the Victorian fire chief from 1990 to 1996, and David Packham, a former CSIRO bushfire scientist and academic who also produced a report on the issue, argued against the regulations, which actively encouraged the builders of new homes to plant trees around the houses for aesthetic reasons.

Mr Incoll told The Australian yesterday the proposed planning rules were "foolhardy and dangerous and ought not to be proceeded with".

"But they were nevertheless instituted," he said. "That is certainly one of the things that people will be looking at as an aftermath of this tragic event."

Mr Packham, now an honorary senior research fellow at Monash University's school of geography and environmental science, wrote in his report, after inspecting the Kinglake to Heidelberg Road: "The mix of fuel, unsafe roadsides and embedded houses, some with zero protection and no hope of survival, will all ensure that when a large fire impinges upon the area a major disaster will result."

Mr Incoll said that in 2003, green groups were pushing for changes to planning laws that included restrictions on the removal of vegetation, "and worse still, the requirement for planting vegetation around and almost over houses, as part of any planning permit to build a house in the shire of Nillumbik, so it gave the appearance from the outside of being a forest".

In 2003, the Nillumbik Ratepayers Group asked Mr Incoll to assess the bushfire risk, and the proposed planning rules.

Council elections were looming, and planning was a major issue. "The green group carried the day in council and the rules came to pass," he said.

Nillumbik Shire councillors, many of whom were last night attending community meetings across the region, declined to comment.

The councillors said it would be inappropriate to speak about a six-year-old report when bushfires were still raging in the area and a royal commission had been announced.

Nillumbik shire calls itself the "green wedge shire". It extends from the Yarra River, on the northwest outskirts of Melbourne to Kinglake National Park. Its villages include Eltham, Hurstbridge, St Andrews, Strathewen and the outskirts of Kinglake.

Mr Incoll and Mr Packham both produced reports for the group. "There was a planning process under the auspices of the state planning authority, and David (Packham) and I gave lengthy evidence," Mr Incoll said.

"They took no notice whatsoever of what we said."

The reports on Nillumbik shire were not the first to warn of the increased bushfire risk associated with failing to manage vegetation around towns.

Victoria's auditor-general warned 17 years ago that a failure to carry out controlled burn-offs placed the state at risk of bushfires. In a 1992 report to parliament, the auditor-general criticised the Department of Conservation and Environment for letting combustible material build up on the forest floor.

"The failure of the department to achieve its planned fuel reduction burns each year has resulted in an increasing accumulation of fuel on forest floors," the report stated. "This makes Victoria's forests and protected lands more susceptible to the occurrence offires."

Like every other Victorian, I am just totally aghast at this bushfire tragedy.

I remember the day. The weather forecasters were warning that it was going to be a very hot day. Then later added - there are going to be very high winds.

Shit. Hot Day+ Strong Winds = Increase chances of a bad bush fire. I sure prayed that the CFA boys had their helmets firmly on.

But its only one day... we had a bad stretch the previous week where we had a string of high 40s.

Over at my place, it didn't seem that hot. I live about 20km away from St. Andrews. I didn't even turn on the air-conditioner, just the fan. I had no inkling that a massive bushfire was happening.

What's there to say? You see it happening on TV. Its like something happening in a foreign country. You see the scorched landscape... its like Mars. Its just wtf fubar. I used to travel pass Marysville on my way to skiing...

The thing that hit me was seeing that 4 car pile up and they were all incinerated because they were caught in an inferno. That got me upset. You could imagine how these poor bastards were trying to drive out to escape - and they were trapped by the fire. They had an accident and bang. Fucking horror. No escape. Fuck.

The thing that I didn't really want to watch was seeing all the politician crybabies weep in front of the TV. There they go parading their sob stories, and weeping crocodile tears because its PR good. Well, maybe they did get upset, I don't know. But when I listen to the Prime Minister struggling to find words to describe the arsonists - I just get pissed off. Evil is staring at you in the fucking face, Prime Minister. Don't you know what it is?? Don't you realize that there are wicked people out there?

I half-expected Robert Hull, the Justice Minister of Victoria to offer calm and tell people to get a sense of perspective. This is the fucker who claims that "longer sentences do not deter crimes". So Arsonists here in Vic usually go to jail for a year. WTF for? Hang the fuckers already.

Few people seem to acknowledge the simple truth: that bushfires are a natural part of Australia. It doesn't take a rocket scientist to work it out. You have massive tracts of land containing highly flammable gum trees, their tinder, you get a month or two of intense heat, low humidity, high winds and a couple of arsonists... heck even a dumb cow like Germaine Greer got it.

Fire is an essential element in the life cycle of Australian forests. Season by season sclerophyll or “hard-leaved” woodlands build up huge amounts of detritus, shed leaves, bark and twiggery, which must burn if there is to be new growth. Many Australian species, including most of the eucalypts, need fire if they are to complete their reproductive cycle. Seeds encased in woody receptacles need their capsules to be split by fire before they can be released to germinate.

For 40 or maybe 60 millennia, Aboriginal peoples managed fire proactively, setting alight woodland, scrubland and grassland, so that they could pass freely, so that game was driven towards them, so that fresh green herbage was available. Aboriginal languages have dozens of words for fire. As the Endeavour sailed up the eastern coast, Captain Cook noted that the skies were darkened with smoke by day and lit up by fire at night.

In the national parks of Australia, the importance of regular burning is well understood. Elsewhere the emphasis has been on prevention. Attempting to prevent fire in most of Australia is simply postponing the inevitable. Bushland that is not burnt regularly turns into a powder keg, as the fuel load inexorably increases. When dry eucalypt woodland goes up, it explodes, turning into a veritable firestorm. If no wind is blowing, it creates its own wind.

One thing that always surprises me whenever I drive up to Hotham - is to see the endless rows of gum trees lining the roads... why are they even there?

Getting into the sensible game, the Age even published a pretty good read by Frank Campbell, the ex-editor of Wildfire magazine. He blames the problem on bad policy.

Contrary to current hyperbole, Black Saturday was not the worst fire day ever. Ash Wednesday's wind speeds ranged from 70 to 120 km/h. A savage south-west front led to most of the deaths and property loss, whereas Saturday had a modest wind change.

Nor was the area burned in the latest fires exceptional. About 300,000 hectares is the likely total, compared with 1.5 million on Black Friday 1939, several million on Black Thursday 1851, 260,000 on Red Tuesday 1898 and 230,000 on Ash Wednesday. Note that the days of the week have mostly been used up already. Every 10 or 20 years there is a bushfire disaster. This isn't going to change.

South-eastern Australia is perhaps the worst fire vortex in the world and we have to improve bushfire policy.

A MAN who lured a woman down an alley, raped her in front of her sobbing four-year-old son and then exploded gunpowder in her eyes has been jailed for least 18 years.

Mark James Dennis faces a maximum 24 years in prison after pleading guilty to 13 sex and robbery charges, including rape and indecent assault.

The 39-year-old, of Tregear, in Sydney's west, admitted abducting and sexually assaulting a woman and a schoolgirl at knifepoint in separate attacks in Sydney's southwest in 2003 and 2005.

In one attack, a 26-year-old woman was raped in front of her four-year-old son on their way home from a Carols by Candlelight service at Liverpool in 2003.

Dennis bound her with rope from his bag before molesting and raping her. He also threatened the sobbing boy with a knife.

Dennis threatened to take the woman to a "gang bang" with his friends who "aren't as nice as me", and to kill her and her son if she went to police.

He then put gunpowder on her eyes and ignited it with a cigarette butt, so she could not see him walking away.

It was an act Judge Penelope Hock, sitting in the NSW District Court in Sydney, described as "gratuitous cruelty or a form of torture".

"This offence is so abhorrent that a substantial sentence must be imposed," she said.

The maximum penalty for charges relating to the attack would total 98 years if served consecutively, she added.

Judge Hock said Dennis was a long-term drug user and had no previous sex offences on his record.

"(These offences mark) a serious and disturbing escalation in his criminality...," she said.

Taking into account time already served, Dennis will become eligible for parole on November 2, 2023.

NSW Police Minister John Watkins has offered his condolences to the family of a baby killed in a brutal stabbing attack.

But he declined to comment on whether the case highlighted the need for a review of the state's mental health system.

The nine-month-old girl died after being stabbed in the neck at a home in Campsie, in Sydney's south-west, about 10.30am (AEDT) on Friday.

A 53-year-old man, reported to have been recently released from a psychiatric hospital, is to face court on Saturday charged with murder.

No doubt the courts will find that he was dropping acid or smoking marijuna- so he was incapable of stopping his actions- and will put him in probabtion or some shit.

THE community and relatives of the victim are entitled to be outraged by the kid glove treatment given to one of the two brutal killers of 73-year-old Marie Zidan.
After plea-bargaining the charge of murder down to manslaughter, the killer was sentenced to six years' jail with a minimum of four, later increased to six by the Court of Appeal.

He has served just over six years for his horrendous crime and has now been released in time for Christmas.

While in jail the man made lewd phone calls to the victim's family.

But there is even greater reason to be appalled.

The man just released was 15 when he killed and sexually assaulted Mrs Zidan and for this reason, though he is now 21, he cannot be named and so can slip anonymously back into the community.

Mrs Zidan's daughter reflected community concern when she told the Herald Sun: "I am worried about public safety. You cannot be rehabilitated if you have no remorse."

The man's accomplice, 16 at the time of the outrage, has also applied for parole.

The Supreme Court rejected an attempt by this newspaper to name both offenders on release.

Thus, the way the law is written it protects criminals at the expense of the community. There is no rational reason why people should not know the names of the two killers. There is every reason why they should.

The law must be changed.

This is absolutely sickening. Scandanavia and Norway- lands which were relatively free from violence, people who lived peaceful lives, have allowed themselves to be overrun by Muslim gangs who rape and murder women.

Protesters 'occupy city buildings'

RENEGADE demonstrators have occupied corporate offices around Melbourne as protests heat up in the lead-up to tomorrow's G20 summit.

An anonymous spokesman for a coalition of protest groups said there had been sit-ins at various ANZ bank branches, global companies including Orica and WorleyParsons, and at the Australian Defence Force recruiting centre.

"ANZ are involved in the Iraqi Trade Bank, which we see as part and parcel of the occupation of that country," he said.

"Today was the day we call corporate engagement day. So we will take the fight to the corporations.

"We hope to disrupt companies that are participating in the occupation of Iraq."

A spokeswoman for WorleyParsons said there had not been a sit-in at the company's Melbourne office and their business had not been disrupted.

Protester Wenny Theresia was part of an occupation of the Orica building in Nicholson Street.

Ms Theresia said 30 people - the company said a dozen - entered the building about 1.15pm (AEDT) and occupied the foyer until 2.50pm (AEDT).

She said the company had been involved in producing cyanide that was used to leech gold from Lake Cowal in north-western NSW.

"I want the companies to know we are not scared," she said.

I can't believe a year has pass... nearly pass.

Quite a lot of things have happened and yet somehow nothing much has really changed in a way.

The elections here in Victoria are coming up. Labor as usual will most likely win. The Liberals are being run by ... rather poor politicians. They need a good party leader- hopefully the new reformed Kennett might come back- but some of his old opponents in the party need to fall on their swords.

I just don't get it. The Labor Party screwed up the state since the 1980s and practically bankrupted it. My enduring memory of that period was seeing hundreds or thousands of people queing up for jobs. Hasn't anyone learnt? WTF did Victorians vote back Labor. They simply don't know how to properly run the country. They increase speed fines, traffic fines- then they fund wanker art festivals that few people come to see. I mean seriously the Labor State earns $400,000,000 a year from speeding fines alone. And yet, the number of fatalities has not dropped off.

I got fined a few months back ago. I was driving down this deserted wide 3 lane road. I think I was going at 70km/h. It was about midnight- the place was unlit. And I couldn't see any speed limit signs. As I drove up the hill, a cop pulled me over and charged me for speeding. The limite was 60- copped a $250 fine.

I think its bloody ridiculous. Everyday, I see idiots driving at 140km/h down the South Eastern Freeway. Every night hoons roar pass my house at 100km/h+ in a surburbian road- the speed limit is 50. Now that's what I call reckless speeding. But the police and authorities don't care. Easier to go after the small fry.

I just saw the film "The Path to 911" based on the 911 Commission Report.

Watch it. Its a film that shows how America sleep walked to 911. It shows how America caught up in its bureaucracy and political infighting allowed, nay embolded, the Islamic terrorists.

The film gained recent notoriety when Clinton and his cohorts tried to suppress and censor the film - claiming inaccuracies, false representation, etc..

OK, the film got some chicken shit details wrong- like Madeleine Albright name wrong. They forgot to put an extra "e" in.

But by and large- the film shows the tragedy of how America, a democracy, has failed- and will continue to fail against this new threat.

I spent sometime watching all the documentaries on 911. Very moving stuff. It was powerful seeing how the Americans gathered around to come back after that terrible event. Like standing in que to give blood after the jets had hit. Like the heroic crew of Flight 93 who fought back and prevented the goatfucker terrorists from flying the plane to their target. At the end of the day, I'm just filled with tremendous sadness for the lives of people who were killed by the Arab terrorists. I can't really say anything more.

A VICTORIAN teenager who made a bomb that maimed a classmate's mother has been allowed to walk free from court.
The 16-year-old (left) adopted the username "Osama31" to search the internet for bomb-making instructions.

And he used the same chemicals that devastated London's transport network last year and that British terrorists have been accused of using in a bid to blow up jet airliners this week.

The Children's Court was told this week that three boys from an outer Melbourne secondary school planned the bombing in September, 2005 - three months after the London Underground bombings killed 56 and injured 700 - after a schoolyard dispute with a female classmate.

One of the teenagers has admitted making the explosive, known as Mother of Satan, which two of his friends detonated.

The revelations come as an investigation has discovered alarming holes in Australia's airport security system.

Lax security procedures throughout the country were uncovered as shock waves from the foiled UK terror plot were felt around the world.

The court heard that the girl was not at her Glen Waverley home when the bomb was detonated, but her mother was maimed by the blast.

EMBATTLED judge Marcus Einfeld has reneged on a promise to identify who was behind the wheel of his speeding car - and blamed police inaction for the silence.
Despite earlier claiming the announcement of the "actual driver" was imminent, Mr Einfeld's legal team yesterday refused to reveal that person's identity.

The silence comes after Mr Einfeld gave three different versions as to who was driving the 67-year-old's silver Lexus when it was clocked at 60km/h in a 50km/h zone at Mosman on January 8 this year.

Barrister Winston Terracini SC yesterday said Mr Einfeld's legal team had not been contacted by NSW Police's State Crime Command.

He said this prevented the disclosure of the person he had earlier claimed had been driving Mr Enfeld's speeding car.

"In light of what Police Minister (Carl) Scully announced yesterday, we will fully co-operate with any inquiry," Mr Terracini told The Saturday Daily Telegraph.

"As soon as the police contact us - we feel that it's far better that we release any information to them (rather than the media)."

As controversy mounted with the release of the ex-federal court judge's shocking driving record, police who will interview Mr Einfeld about his controversial evidence would not reveal the status of their investigation.

State Crime Command operations manager Detective Chief Superintendent Peter Dein refused to answer a series of questions posed by The Saturday Daily Telegraph about the inquiry.

It is understood detectives plan to interview Mr Einfeld next week about the controversial evidence he gave to the Downing Centre Local Court on Monday to beat a a $77 speeding fine.

Mr Einfeld told the court he had been in Forster on the day of the offence and that he had loaned his car to Professor Teresa Brennan.

The Daily Telegraph had learned Florida-based Professor Brennan died in January 2003 - three (FCUKING) years before the speeding offence.

The respected human rights activist was also uncontactable through his city offices.

In Roumanian Journey, Sacheverell Sitwell recounted his visit in 1937 to the Bukovina, formerly the eastern-most province of the Habsburg Empire, then part of Romania, now in the Ukraine. Its capital, Czernowitz, was a melange of Romanians, Ruthenians, Poles, Germans, Armenians and Swabians, but, as Sitwell couldn't help noticing, you'd never know that from a stroll down Main Street:

There is not a shop that has not a Jewish name painted above its windows. The entire commerce of the place is in the hands of the Jews. Yiddish is spoken here more than German.

Get this. The NSW police don't release details of a gang rape in the heart of Sydney. They even have video footage of the men who gang rape the 19 year old woman. Yet the police take 2 months- 60 days - to release the details.

This is total bullshit. Who are the NSW police trying to protect? The rapists?

Police have defended a two-month delay in alerting the public to the violent gang rape of a young woman in a toilet block in the middle of busy Darling Harbour.

The 19-year-old woman was attacked by four men on Thursday June 8 about 6.30pm in public toilets near the Chinese Gardens at the western end of Liverpool Street, police said.

The woman was on Darling Walk when approached by five men, who struck up a conversation with her and allegedly lured her into a female toilet, police said.

Four men violently sexually assaulted the woman, taunting her and threatening her, while a fifth man stood lookout over the Thursday-night passers-by, police said.

Police have refused to explain why the public were not alerted to the sex attackers earlier, saying only it could have "adversely impacted" a "very protracted investigation".

"A lot of avenues have been covered in depth," City Central police crime manager Detective Inspector John Alt told reporters this morning.

"We believe that this stage is the appropriate time to go public and seek the assistance of the public in our investigation."

Mr Alt would not provide details of how the "cowardly and brazen" attack came about, only that it went on "over a shortened time frame".

He would not confirm reports it lasted up to an hour or explain how she was "lured" into the toilet block.

"How they got the lady there is also part of our investigation," he said.

Detectives believed the attack was an isolated incident, Mr Alt said.

Darling Harbour was a heavily-populated area and there was no cause for extra public concern, he said.

After the attack, the men stole the woman's mobile phone before fleeing towards the entertainment centre.

The woman ran from the toilet block and raised the alarm before being taken to Royal Prince Alfred Hospital for treatment, police said.

Four of the men being sought were dressed in similar white overalls, suggesting they may be work mates.

Several of the men were carrying backpacks, one of them described as yellow and black.

Although I'm weak in anthropology, I did get an 'A' in biology years ago, and what I learned has given me insight into these strange organisms we call Middle Eastern Muslims. Every organism alive on the planet is good at something. Each has some sort of defense or capability or behavior that gave them an edge over other organisms of past eras and allowed them to evolve to overcome life's challenges and survive to this day.

Rabbits are fast runners and fast breeders. Tigers are amazingly skilled hunting machines. Frogs have poisonous skin. etc..

But Muslims, like the stick bug and the chameleon and the stone fish, have developed, to an amazing extent, the ability to deceive. And it is that ability that confounds their environmental competitors (you and me) the most.

These types of organisms -- "lie-in-wait" predators -- must know the full range of behaviors of the organisms they wish to defeat, so as to position themselves correctly for the strike. They are not necessarily strong or powerful, so they must know what frightens, arouses, lures, relaxes, and weakens that which they intend to destroy. For the Muslim, the idea is to exploit our greatest vulnerability -- PC thinking.

It is no accident that the Muslims chose to openly start attacking the West on their own turf in the '60s and '70s, right around the time when PC ideology in our culture was starting to pick up steam and cloud our collective judgment. Would Muslims have attacked New York while U.S. Grant was president? Or London while King George III was on the throne? How about the Paris riots during Napoleon's time? I don't think so.

PETER Breen is a NSW parliamentarian with a disturbing, sympathetic interest in the fate of young men who have committed violent sexual offences.

He likes to meet them in jail and talk to them about their crimes - and this week, he released a book in which he declares his love for two of them.

"I'm sorry if people find this shocking," he tells The Weekend Australian. "But these men are nice blokes. I'm sorry if that offends people, but it's true."

Two of the prisoners that Breen "loves" are two of the men who raped, bound and drowned a 20-year-old woman, Janine Balding, in September 1988. The law still protects the identity of one of them, so he is known only as "B".

As a child, B once broke the neck of a crimson rosella and left it dead on the family's stone balcony, a sure sign of trouble afoot. He was the product of a broken home; his mother tried to put him in youth detention.

He ran away, and went to stay in a filthy squat in Sydney. While he was there, he told one of the other street kids he would teach him how to box. Instead, together with a friend, he tied the boy's hands in front of him with the coloured, plastic cords they hang in shop doors, strapped him to a chair, and belted the back of his head with a sledgehammer.

The victim managed to crawl to safety but there was so much blood on the walls that the boys had to leave the squat.

They spent the next day riding on trains: flipping through porn magazines, showing the pictures to other passengers and putting their feet up on the seats.

By now, there were five in their gang, including one girl, Carol Anne Arrow, 15, and her 15-year-old boyfriend of five days. There was B, aged 14, and his friend, Matthew James Elliott, 16. The oldest of the group was 22-year-old Stephen "Shorty" Jamieson, routinely described in press reports as a hideous creature.

Shorty's mother had been drunk practically throughout her pregnancy; he was born with fetal alcohol syndrome, with ape-like features, a flat, vacant face, and a strange, stunted body. He is only 122cm tall and his IQ is about 65.

One of these boys said: "How about we get a sheila and rape her?"
They got off the train at Sutherland station. When they saw Janine, they asked her for a smoke. She kindly stopped.

They showed her the knife and told her to get into the back seat of her 1979 blue-green Gemini, and they set out toward Sydney's busy F4 freeway.

Shorty Jamieson would later tell police: "The girl, Janine, was screaming, so I put the gag into her mouth. Then a bit further on, Matthew (Elliott) took the gag out of her mouth and he made her give him a head job. After a while (the driver) stopped the car and he got in the back and he made her give him a head job, too. Both told her that if she didn't give them head jobs they would stab her with the knife."

According to testimony given at the trial, as the car drove along, one of the boys in the back kept up a low, sing-song chant: "Nice night for a murder. Nice night for a murder." Janine begged them: "Just don't stab me." She also kept asking to be put out at the next corner. She said: "Let me out and I won't tell."

Instead, the driver pulled into a dark spot off the F4 freeway at Minchinbury, in Sydney's outer west. They pulled Janine out of the back seat, put her on the grass and raped and sodomised her.

"Then it was my turn," said Shorty. "I had sex with her.

"She was pretty worn out by now and wasn't screamin' as much any more."

The youngest boy, B, raped her, too, slapping her repeatedly because she would not "buck".

Then the 16-year-old said: "We've got to kill her."

They took rope from the boot of Janine's car. They tied her feet together with five turns of the cord before passing it up around her neck and down again, so she was effectively tied up like a ball.

They heaved her over a barbed wire fence and then pushed, dragged and rolled the terrified woman more than 100m, across the paddock, towards the dam.

Still alive, her face was pushed into the water. Peter Ellis, who performed the autopsy, reported there was dirty water in her airway, "indicating drowning".

The day after the murder, the boy, B, took police to the dam.

Back at home, her mother, Bev Balding, was waiting for news. It wasn't like Janine to go wandering. Her phone rang at 4.30am. She ran to pick it up, thinking: "They've found her." And then her world fell apart.

Jamieson, Elliott and B were convicted of rape and murder, and sentenced to life in jail.

None of these details is new to Peter Breen. Most of them are included in his new book, called Life as a Sentence: the True Story of the Janine Balding Murder. But he believes that Shorty has been wrongly convicted of the crime, and that the youngest boy, B, now 32, should be freed.

In one strange paragraph, on page 239, he refers to a talkback caller who said it appears Breen "loves" the killers. Breen responds: "The statement causes me to blink at the stars. It is a form of love, I suppose, to believe in a person and work hard for them in the hope they receive mercy as well as justice. I love Shorty Jamieson no less and I'm not ashamed to say so."

When these words were republished in Sydney's The Daily Telegraph this week, all hell broke lose.

Breen was forced to resign from the Labor Party, which he joined only in May.

In an interview with The Weekend Australian, Breen says he is "confused and amazed" by the week's events. But he won't withdraw the statement.

"It's true," he says. "What I feel for them is a form of love. I don't withdraw that."

Breen was born and raised Catholic but he is not talking about Christian love and forgiveness. He means what he says: "They are very nice people. If they are released, yes, of course, they can stay with me."

Breen was elected as a member of the Legislative Council in the NSW parliament as a member of his own Reform the Legal System Party, on the infamous "tablecloth ballot" in 1999.

He received 35,000 primary votes - a tiny number in a state with more than eight million people. "But they made a brilliant choice, those people," he said this week. "And it's appropriate that I represent minority interests, because I represent a very small number of voters." Breen is driven by justice issues. He is outraged by the so-called "cement" legislation passed by the Carr government in 2001 that effectively "cements" 10 men accused of vicious crimes in prison for natural life.

The men who killed Janine Balding are on the list; so, too, are the Murphy brothers, who murdered Anita Cobby.

"I realise it's not a popular cause," Breen says. "But the point is, Janine Balding was killed by children. One of these boys was 14 years old and he had the mental capacity of a nine- or 10-year-old. There is a principle of proportionality in sentencing, and when he committed that crime, the average sentence was 18 years. He deserves to be released. That boy is now a man who has standards and values that are very different. The lynch mob doesn't understand. He's deeply remorseful."

Opposition law and order spokesman Andrew Humpherson says Breen's views are disturbing.

"For some reason, he's got very sympathetic views for the most unpleasant people in our prison system," he says.

"It seems to be an obsession. He's just raised it constantly and regularly. His constituency is violent killers.

"And it's a bit rich of (Premier) Morris Iemma to say he had to go this week, because he's advocated these views many times over the years. The Labor Party knew exactly what it was getting."

Breen switched to Labor on May 4, but had been voting with them on most issues for years.

Breen does, indeed, come across as a reasonable human being. He speaks clearly, firmly, without hysterics. But most people would regard his views as abhorrent. For example, of the terrible rape and murder of Janine, he says: "You know, as crimes go, it's not in the worst category of offences." The pack rape and murder of a defenceless woman aged just 20? "You say pack rape and it sounds like multiple offenders," he says. "But she was only raped by two offenders." Later, he says: "She was not bludgeoned. And they were children; they had low IQs."

He rejects the idea "that I'm somehow attracted to prisoners, that violent offenders have some kind of allure for me".

Yet he campaigns pretty much constantly on behalf of 10 men locked up for crimes of terrible sexual violence against women.

"That's a coincidence," he says. "It just happens that all 10 of the men who are cemented into prison under this legislation, the victims were women. But to say I have some sort of illicit affection for men who commit these crimes, that's not true. The idea that this is a passion, like a physical passion, is wrong."

Breen has been married and divorced and now has a partner, who, he says, "would be mortified by the idea that this was passionate love". "I have never, in my whole life, been physically attracted to a man. I can't think of anything more repellent than another man's buttocks."

Humpherson says he does not object to Breen's basic principles: that all people deserve a fair trial; that evidence of wrongful conviction deserves to be explored; that mercy and redemption are an important part of the justice system. It is true, he acknowledges, that NSW police in the 1980s concocted evidence and beat criminals to get confessions, and he says all avenues of appeal deserve to be explored.

"But Breen is not your normal person," he says. "He's an advocate for killers, and he wants to meet them and talk to them. Like I say, he's just a very weird MP."

There is concern about the company he keeps, too. Breen's book about Janine Balding is dedicated to the memory of "human rights advocate, mentor and friend, John Marsden".

Like the colourful Sydney lawyer who died earlier this year, Breen spent two years at the seminary, studying to be a priest, and he went to work for Marsden in 1969. They remained friends "who fought all the time". "I miss him, you know," Breen says. "He would have loved all this."

One who definitely does not "love all this" is Bev Balding.

She will never recover from the shock of her daughter's murder, and its aftermath. The trial was aborted three times -- twice in the first few days and again after six weeks, when the boys said the police had the wrong Shorty.

She sat through horrific evidence: the boys at first denied raping Janine, but forensic experts took swabs from her vagina and anus, extracted cells from the semen they found and matched it to the boys' blood.

Janine's room has stayed empty all these years. She was a feminine woman. She'd left behind hair curling tongs and knitting patterns. She would now be 38, perhaps with a couple of kids.

Breen's campaign to have the killers freed is deeply distressing to Bev Balding, who wanted them hanged. "I think he's gullible, listening to criminals," she says,from Wagga Wagga in southern NSW.

Breen does appear to be in the thrall of B, the boy who has grown into a tall, powerfully built man. Prison photographs show him with a wide, charismatic smile, and he is a born-again Christian.

But charisma has always been a gift to the malevolent. A psychiatrist's report describes B as "a charming psychopath".

I ask Breen what he meant when he wrote that the statement about loving B caused him to "blink at the stars"? There are clear, romantic overtones.

"Well, there's no secret message there," Breen says. "I can't answer you. I simply don't know. The book is just in draft form. Perhaps I'll take it out."

Breen must know he's rowing uphill in his campaign to get B released: another of the boys who served time for the rape (but not murder) of Janine was released after eight years. Eleven months later, he was back in prison, having committed another violent sexual offence.

Many in the community would not take that risk again.

The Noble Savage

Then later the PC era came in- and the cowboys were the villans, the white man was evil, and the indigenous North American natives were the good guys, pure, honest, bereft of deceit... saints. Seems this PC history is a tad fabricated. Lefty historians went out of their way to make up new history to paint a different picture. Lefties as you know- think that truth is subjective and doesn't exist. So they make it up, the cocksuckers.

Before the white man came? War

We've deluded ourselves into believing in the myth of the noble and peaceful primitive

Nicholas Wade's Before The Dawn is one of those books full of eye-catching details. For example, did you know the Inuit have the largest brains of any modern humans? Something to do with the cold climate. Presumably, if this global warming hooey ever takes off, their brains will be shrinking with the ice caps.

But the passage that really stopped me short was this:

"Both Keeley and LeBlanc believe that for a variety of reasons anthropologists and their fellow archaeologists have seriously underreported the prevalence of warfare among primitive societies. . . . 'I realized that archaeologists of the postwar period had artificially "pacified the past" and shared a pervasive bias against the possibility of prehistoric warfare,' says Keeley."

That's Lawrence Keeley, a professor at the University of Illinois. And the phrase that stuck was that bit about artificially pacifying the past. We've grown used to the biases of popular culture. If a British officer meets a native -- African, Indian, whatever -- in any movie, play or novel of the last 30 years, the Englishman will be a sneering supercilious sadist and the native will be a dignified man of peace in perfect harmony with his environment in whose tribal language there is not even a word for "war" or "killing" or "weapons of mass destruction." A few years ago, I asked Tim Rice, who'd just written the lyrics for Disney's Aladdin and The Lion King, why he wasn't doing Pocahontas. "Well, the minute they mentioned it," he said, "I knew the Brits would be the bad guys. I felt it was my patriotic duty to decline." Sure enough, when the film came out, John Smith and his men were the bringers of environmental devastation to the New World. "They prowl the earth like ravenous wolves," warns the medicine man, whereas Chief Powhatan wants everyone to be "guided to a place of peace." Fortunately, Captain Smith comes to learn from Pocahontas how to "paint with all the colours of the wind."

In reality, Pocahontas's fellow Algonquin Indians were preyed on by the Iroquois, "who took captives home to torture them before death," observes Nicholas Wade en passant. The Iroquois? Surely not. Only a year or two back, the ethnic grievance lobby managed to persuade Congress to pass a resolution that the United States Constitution was modelled on the principles of the Iroquois Confederation -- which would have been news to the dead white males who wrote it. With Disney movies, one assumes it's just the modishness of showbiz ignoramuses and whatever multiculti theorists they've put on the payroll as consultants. But professor Keeley and Steven LeBlanc of Harvard disclose almost as an aside that, in fact, their scientific colleagues were equally invested in the notion of the noble primitive living in peace with nature and his fellow man, even though no such creature appears to have existed. "Most archaeologists," says LeBlanc, "ignored the fortifications around Mayan cities and viewed the Mayan elite as peaceful priests. But over the last 20 years Mayan records have been deciphered. Contrary to archaeologists' wishful thinking, they show the allegedly peaceful elite was heavily into war, conquest and the sanguinary sacrifice of beaten opponents.... The large number of copper and bronze axes found in Late Neolithic and Bronze Age burials were held to be not battle axes but a form of money."

And on, and on. Do you remember that fabulously preserved 5,000-year-old man they found in a glacier in 1991? He had one of those copper axes the experts assured us were an early unit of currency. Unfortunately for this theory, he had it hafted in a manner that suggested he wasn't asking, "Can you break a twenty?" "He also had with him," notes professor Keeley, "a dagger, a bow, and some arrows; presumably these were his small change." Nonetheless, anthropologists concluded that he was a shepherd who had fallen asleep and frozen peacefully to death in a snowstorm. Then the X-ray results came back and showed he had an arrowhead in him.

Not for the first time, the experts turn out to be playing what children call "Opposite Land." There's more truth in Cole Porter's couplet from Find Me A Primitive Man:

I don't mean the kind that belongs to a club But the kind that has a club that belongs to him.

Although Porter was the kind that belongs to a club, the second line accurately conveys his own taste in men. He'd have been very annoyed if Mister Primitive had turned out to be some mellow colours-of-your-windiness hippy-dippy granola-cruncher.

Lawrence Keeley calculates that 87 per cent of primitive societies were at war more than once per year, and some 65 per cent of them were fighting continuously. "Had the same casualty rate been suffered by the population of the twentieth century," writes Wade, "its war deaths would have totaled two billion people." Two billion! In other words, we're the aberration: after 50,000 years of continuous human slaughter, you, me, Bush, Cheney, Blair, Harper, Rummy, Condi, we're the nancy-boy peacenik crowd. "The common impression that primitive peoples, by comparison, were peaceful and their occasional fighting of no serious consequence is incorrect. Warfare between pre-state societies was incessant, merciless, and conducted with the general purpose, often achieved, of annihilating the opponent."

Why then, against all the evidence, do we venerate the primitive? And to the point of pretending a bunch of torturing marauders devised the separation of powers in the U.S. Constitution. We do it for the same reason we indulge behaviour like that at Caledonia, Ont. We want to believe that the yard, the cul-de-sac, the morning commute, the mall are merely the bland veneer of our lives, and that underneath we are still that noble primitive living in harmony with the great spirits of the forest and the mountain. The reality is that "civilization" -- Greco-Roman-Judeo-Christian -- worked very hard to stamp out the primitive within us, and for good reason.

I was interested to read Wade's book after a month in which men raised in suburban Ontario were charged with a terrorist plot that included plans to behead the Prime Minister, and the actual heads of three decapitated police officers were found in the Tijuana River. The Mexican drug gangs weren't Muslim last time I checked, but evidently decapitation isn't just for jihadists anymore: if you want to get ahead, get a head. A couple of years back, I came across a column in The East African by Charles Onyango-Obbo musing on the return of cannibalism to the Dark Continent. Ugandan-backed rebels in the Congo (four million dead but, as they haven't found a way to pin it on Bush, nobody cares) had been making victims' relatives eat the body parts of their loved ones. You'll recall that, when Samuel Doe was toppled as Liberia's leader, he was served a last meal of his own ears. His killers kept his genitals for themselves, under the belief that if you eat a man's penis you acquire his powers. One swallow doesn't make a summer, of course, but I wonder sometimes if we're not heading toward a long night of re-primitivization. In his shrewd book Civilization And Its Enemies, Lee Harris writes:

"Forgetfulness occurs when those who have been long inured to civilized order can no longer remember a time in which they had to wonder whether their crops would grow to maturity without being stolen or their children sold into slavery by a victorious foe. . . . That, before 9/11, was what had happened to us. The very concept of the enemy had been banished from our moral and political vocabulary."

It's worse than Harris thinks. We're not merely "forgetful." We've constructed a fantasy past in which primitive societies lived in peace and security with nary a fear that their crops would be stolen or their children enslaved. War has been the natural condition of mankind for thousands of years, and our civilization is a very fragile exception to that. What does it say about us that so many of our elites believe exactly the opposite -- that we are a monstrous violent rupture with our primitive pacifist ancestors? It's never a good idea to put reality up for grabs. You can bet your highest-denomination axe on that.

Cursed for Ten Generations

Often when I read the Bible- the Old Testatment- I am usually shocked by the amount of savagery and violence where whole nations are killed, millions of people slaughtered- even women and children targeted.

I often wonder why entire people groups including children were killed. Then I read about how the Palestineans are teaching their children to hate their enemies... and I wonder. Read this horror story of the corruption of generations.

If you have the stomach for it, go and read this "beautiful story" told on Egyptian TV about the wonder of child martyrdom. It begins:

"Let's listen to a very beautiful story to learn about the courage of a child, and how, when a child is brought up in a good home, and receives proper education in faith, he loves martyrdom, which becomes like an instinct for him. He can never give it up."

A young child replies, "I learned that the Jews are the people of treachery and betrayal..."; and the Sheik, overjoyed that his message has come across so clearly, responds, "That is the most beautiful thing I have heard - that the Jews are the people of treachery, betrayal, and vileness."

It has always surprised me that more historians and anthropologists don’t look at child-rearing practices to try to understand the basis of cultural health, pathology and change, and why some cultures are so much sicker than others. But hardly any do, mainly because of the dominance of the politically correct view that no culture is better or worse than any other--except for Western culture, which is the worst. And yet, how could it not be? If you have a culture that systematically abuses children in the most grotesque way--say, the Palestinians--why should anyone be surprised that they are arguably the most comprehensively depraved people on earth?

For anyone who cares to actually look at the evidence, the romantic idea that Islam is a "religion of peace" has also been thoroughly debunked. The heirs of Mohammed have had ceaseless war, violence, oppression of women and children and frankly crazy cultural beliefs and practices since the religion's inception; and all of it has been culturally designed to keep practitioners from noticing their own religion and culture's inadequacies, irrationality, and barbarism.

But what do the medieval child-rearing practices of Islam--as evidenced by the two TV programs for children--show us about the culture?

What a good parent does is hard to remember; and what a bad parent does is hard to forget. When we are confronted with repeated behavior that shocks us, dsmays us and even repulses us, we can be sure that something has gone wrong somewhere.

Without ignoring the role of biology, it is clear that family obviously plays an extremely important role in the development of personality, especially in providing values and role-models. There is an entire dissertation or two in the dysfunctional family of Middle Eastern Muslims, where women are hidden and prevented from being able to be whole persons.

What impact does such a system--even in its mildest incarnation--have on the developement of BOTH girls and boys?

Even today in the halls of "modern" Islam, there are actual "debates" about whether women can drive cars or go out into public alone. The double standards of modesty and behavior encouraged by the current practice of Islam are destructive to the normal development of personality in both males and females.

Is there anyone who believes that such medieval attitudes towards women don't have a profoundly negative impact on the personalities of both the men and women who develop in such environments? Males are encouraged to be psychopaths; females to be their willing victims and enablers; as well as breeders for the jihad. When you see large groups of men willingly blowing themselves up to kill innocents, you know there is some sort of psychopathy at work. When the only way to express "gender liberation" is for a woman to imitate the homicidal / suicidal rages of the males--you know there is a problem.

Consider also, how a child could grow up in any sense normal-- knowing that their mother and father think of them only as fodder for jihad and that he has no worth to them otherwise.

Along with parenting issues, cultural factors in child-rearing play an extremely important role in personality formation and can, under certain circumstances, "stack the cards" against normal develoment even if all other factors, including biology, are benign. Michael Stone, the author of Abnormalities of Personality: Within and Beyond the Realm of Treatment comments:

Children born into authoritarian, tyrannical regimes are systematically programmed (by teachers or political authorities) to develop habits of thought and behavior at variance with parental and ommon human values. Such programming deforms the personility in any of a number of ways: one will become rigid, or mindlessly obedient, or cruel, or rebellious, or dour and bitter, etc.

We see in research studies of people from fringe or outcast social groups (such as gangs), that the members of such groups often behave respectfully and honestly toward others within their own group, but treat outsiders as if they were not human, without any sense of wrongdoing.

The ringleaders of such groups are often the the true psychopaths, and these leaders have a seemingly unlimited supply of morally weak or immature individuals (many of them very young)--who embrace antisocial behavior under group pressure.
We also know that in time of war, or social ferment, many formerly respectable, or at least "contained" non-aggressive persons (young men, especially) turn to thuggery--their morality extending only so far as expediency and conformity to the mob or gangster group of which they have become a part. Some will remain antisocial even after the crisis/riot/war passes; the majority revert to outward respectability.

Having already a predisposition because of parenting issues, the culture of Islam "stacks the deck" further by first encouraging the subjugation of women by men and giving it a religious blessing.

The Koran says (Sureh 4, Verse 35) that men have authority over women (not just the wife but sisters, daughters, and all females). If they disobey, "first admonish them, then refuse to sleep with them, and then beat them". In Islamic countries, women are second-class citizens. They are counted as 1/2 a witness in a legal proceeding; and they can inherit only one-half as much as a man. Their sexuality is considered so inflammatory, they must be hidden under clothing that prevents anyone from seeing them. In Saudi Arabia, sons may be sent to foreign universities but daughters are not even allowed to drive.

Why are women's rights issues--or rather, the lack of them-- of importance in developing antisocial psychopathology? In the case of Islam, the religion itself has set the stage for an ongoing potentially abusive situation in the family; in heterosexual relationships; and in the culture.

The subservient role of women in the religion and their status as lesser beings breeds sadism in the male, simply because it is so easy (and sanctioned) to take out your frustrations or impotence on the "inferior" half of the population. This practice is not dissimilar to why people will take out their anger and negative emotions on pets or children. Being allowed to do so teaches an important psychological lesson that all budding psychopaths learn: "I am more important and powerful because I can hurt or kill this weak person". It is often a matter of honor to have absolute control over the identified weak person; and a matter of shame if they disobey you (see here). A male's status as a man can only be maintained by having power over the women.

Through a process that Anna Freud documents called "Identification with the Aggressor" these dynamics also breed the same sadistic tendency in women, though they have many fewer options in acting it out (female suicide bombers; and mothers who cheer the deaths of their sons and daughters in Allah's cause etc.)

The second factor in Islamic culture that "stacks the deck", encouraging abnormal personality development is the perpetual war against the infidel inherent in externalization of the concept of " jihad".

Those who see "jihad" as an inner struggle will not generally evolve into psychopaths, because internalizing the process has a greater chance of fostering insight and self-awareness, rather than brutality. But even these "moderate" practitioners of Islam do not stand up and loudly contradict the psychopathic elements in their religion; rather, they invite these elements to come "teach" at their mosques and abdicate leadership roles to them.

Those who do not have the innate biological or parental resources to prevent it become the disposable fodder that can then act out the psychopaths' scripts for them. Such individuals become the stooges--the suicide/homicide bombers--who mindlessly carry out their leaders' orders without every once considering that if holiness and sainthood are guaranteed by becoming a human bomb for Allah , then why is it that their leaders are not jumping with joy to grab the opportunity for themselves?

Islam has become toxic, infusing the entire Middle East with a culture inimical to not just the 50% who are female; but equally to the half who are male and consider themselves "superior". Children are raised in a misogynist family and cultural environment and the young boys are thus encouraged to hatred and violence. This has been going on for decades among the Palestinians in particular; but everywhere the jihad mindset has spread it cancerous message.

The child-rearing practices of a toxic Islam have achieved a pinnacle in the suicide bomber/murderer; and the religious indoctrination of children into the cult of jihad and hate. Those who willingly follow this cult of death meet many of the psychiatric criteria for an antisocial personality including: (1) A glib, superficial charm (especially the leaders) (2) A grandiose sense of self-worth; (3) Pathological lying; (4) Manipulative behavior; (5) Lack of remorse or guilt for their behavior; (6) Lack of the usual behavioral controls; (7) Deviant sexual behavior and attitudes (this has repeatedly been reported on in the Arab and Islamic culture and would not be surprising considering the distortion and denigration of females in the society); (8) Jealousy and envy; (9) A sense of entitlement; and (10) A failure to accept responsibility for one's own actions.

A combination of cultural and social factors in Islam encourages the development of the many of traits inherent in the psychopathic or antisocial personality. The predominance of this personality pattern fosters and feeds on phenomenon of terrorism and provides the cultural underpinnings that support its continuation.

Psychopathic behavior exists within all cultures. What is different about Islam is that the content of its creed has given personal and societal sanction to such behavior when it is directed toward "inferiors" within the culture and anyone outside the culture. Within this religious framework, murder, torture, intimidation and brutality can be used --not only with impunity--but with guarantees of holiness and rewards in the afterlife. Not only are the adherents safe from censure, they are actually lauded and celebrated as heroes of Islam.

Psychopaths cannot function openly or for long where there is freedom, equality, and the rule of law. That is why terrorists are so desperate to prevent the establisment of democracies and prefer Islamic law which encourages and supports their psychopathy. Individual thought and creativity; reason and justice; and the pursuit of happiness--all are completely incompatible with the psychopath's agenda.

As we see in the TV programs in Egypt and throughout the Middle East, there is an ongoing abuse of children, both psychological and physical, of monstrous proportions. To become a ruthless, cold, semi-human serial murderer, you have to be carefully taught and nurtured.

Tiptoeing around this issue so as not to offend or make judgements about the sickness of Islamic culture is nothing more than enabling hate and true evil.

Another tragic day. A young girl gets raped and murdered by some cretin. She went to the shopping mall with her Uncle and her brother and sister. Went to the toilets for a few minutes and promptly disappeared. Some sick fucker grabs her, rapes her, then strangles her to death.

A MAN accused of murdering a three-year-old Sydney boy had applied a 240-volt current to the child's chest, the NSW Supreme Court has been told. William Thomas Clare was babysitting the boy, who cannot be named for legal reasons, when the boy died on September 13, 2003 at Clare's Croydon unit. As his trial began today, Clare, 34, pleaded guilty to sexually assaulting the boy, but denies murdering him.

Clare told police the boy had been choking the night he died and he tried to revive him by using electrical wires like a heart starter. But Mr Maxwell said Clare's account "that this crude and dangerous mechanism was used in an attempt to save life will be put under the closest scrutiny during the course of this trial".

Mr Maxwell said Clare had used exposed wires plugged into a power board, which itself was plugged in to a 240-volt socket.

The trial is expected to hear expert evidence that a one-second contact with the wires could stop the heart and cause death.

Just because you're morally against Guantanamo Bay doesn't make it illegal. Instead of criticising our treatment of these fools, how about come up with an alternative that won't result in them making their way back to Iraq, or any other nation for that matter, and killing more innocent people. Since you're a human rights activist, perhaps you could help gain some support for your cause and tell the rest of us forum readers why you and your kind scream so loudly when a police officer uses excessive force arresting a criminal, or a soldier mishandles a POW. Yet the silence is deafening when it comes to actually condemning those who truly do commit the gravest human rights abuses such as murderers, rapists and suicide bombers. You appear quite content to condemn those in Afghanistan and Iraq to an eternity of misery as long as we don't infringe on the `rights' of those who are responsible for that misery.

To ABC listener (16 June), `He deserved to be brought to justice', I find that comment laughable. We've all seen how much of a joke our courts have become because of activists and left wing lawyers, let alone the farce that is the international court. Please explain how you equate the death of 3000 innocent people with the death of Zarqawi? That comment is so ridiculous it is offensive. Robbers stab new father to death

THE father of a newborn baby was stabbed to death after he and fellow patrons chased a gang of armed robbers from a hotel in Sydney's inner west yesterday.
Witnesses said Stoyche Petresky, 34, was stabbed repeatedly with a large hunting knife and a machete on Church St, St Peters, about 12.30am. Mr Petresky - whose wife gave birth to their third child a fortnight ago - was one of about eight men who ran from the White Horse Hotel after being held up.

Their four attackers, all men of Pacific Islander appearance, stormed the pub just before midnight and used a sawn-off shotgun and knives to steal cash and belongings from patrons and staff.

Supt Peter Cotter from State Crime Command said some "mini scuffles" followed.

Witness Kenny Tasker, 22, said: "It was just an onslaught. These blokes piled out of the pub and chased the other guys. I saw people getting hit with baseball bats, crowbars and pool cues -- all down the street they were fighting."

Ken Stewart, whose apartment balcony looks over the site where Mr Petresky died, said the gang turned on the young father. "They looked like they were hacking into him with machetes," he said.

A distraught hotel patron and friend said Mr Petresky had emigrated with his young family from Macedonia, where he had worked as a police officer.

"He had a baby boy just two weeks ago," the man said. "Now, he has a son who will grow up without a dad."

Newtown inspector Ken Finch said Mr Petresky was taken to Royal Prince Alfred Hospital but could not be revived.

"(He) was doing what he thought to be the right thing and that has resulted in his very tragic death," Insp Finch said.

It's sad that within minutes of announcing Abu Musab al-Zarqawi's death, the network morning shows were already carrying criticism of the Bush administration. Not only did NBC invite Sen. Joe Biden to attack Bush incompetence (funny day for that!), ABC's Bill Weir reminded the audience that Zarqawi beheaded American Nicholas Berg, and then replayed Berg's left-wing dad saying at the time that he had no desire for his son's killers to be killed. Weir then reported that he spoke to Berg's father this morning, and he condemned the Zarqawi killing as part of an endless cycle of retribution.

Weir then turned to "Another of Zarqawi's victims, American Nick Berg. Who can forget the most chilling video of all. You can see Zarqawi standing behind Nick Berg. Zarqawi believed to have personally beheaded him." Then, he showed old footage of an interview with Berg's peacenik father:

Charlie Gibson: "I wonder as you watch this now happening in repetition, if there are feelings of a desire in you for revenge?"

Michael Berg: "I would like these people to be stopped, I would like them to be arrested, I would like them to receive justice. I would not want to see any of them killed and I don't want revenge. I don't want to personally attack those people."

Weir added: "And we did speak with Nick Berg's father this morning and he says he takes no satisfaction in news of Zarqawi's death there. In fact, he denounces the killing as yet another death in a never ending cycle of retribution and death there as well. And he has been a rather vocal, harsh critic of the Bush administration for, you know, invading this country in the first place and he expressed that again this morning."

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - The al Qaeda leader in Iraq, Abu Musab al-Zarqawi, was killed in a joint attack by U.S. helicopters and Iraqi forces, ABC news reported on Thursday.

It said U.S. helicopters hit a house near Baquba, 40 miles (65 km) north of Baghdad, at 6 p.m. local time on Wednesday.

"Zarqawi was apparently injured at first... The Americans found him. They handed him over to the Iraqis and he later died of his injuries," ABC said.

The youth section of the major conservative opposition party in Norway, has set up a fundraising campaign in which they say they will buy Mullah Krekar a one-way airplane ticket to his home in Northern Iraq. Krekar, whose real name is Najmuddin Faraj Ahmad, is an Iraqi Kurd who received political asylum in Norway in 1991. According to Krekar’s lawyer the campaign is not funny and proves that the Fremkrittspartiet’s youth section has no respect for human rights.

Despite being recognized as a fugitive from Saddam Hussein’s Iraq, Krekar travelled home regularly until 2002. He helped establish an Islamist republic there. Krekar became the co-founder and first leader of Ansar al-Islam, the Kurdish subsidiary of al-Qaeda. Kurdish villages controlled by Ansar al-Islam were subjected to sharia laws: schools for girls were destroyed; singing and musical instruments were forbidden; non-Muslim Kurds were forced to convert. Ansar al-Islam also used terrorist tactics, such as the deployment of suicide bombers, in its conflicts with other Kurdish nationalist groups such as the Patriotic Union of Kurdistan (PUK).

In August 2002, while he was in Iraq, the Norwegian government revoked his refugee status on the grounds that he had traveled back to his homeland. In February 2003 the Norwegian government ordered that Krekar be sent back to Iraq.

The order, however, was not implemented because Krekar, whose wife and children have acquired Norwegian nationality, appealed. Krekar has not been arrested because, according to the Norwegian judiciary, his link to terrorist organisations has not been adequately proven. He received the support of Amnesty International.

In June 2004 Krekar was convicted of terrorism by a military tribunal in Jordan. He was sentenced in absentia to 15 years of hard labor. The Norwegian prosecutors dismissed the charges because the Jordanians allegedly tortured a potential witness against Krekar.

Last September, in an interview on al-Jazeera, Krekar threatened Norway with terrorism if it expelled him. Last March he told the Norwegian press that Osama bin Laden is “a good person.” He also said on Norwegian television that the publication of Muhammad cartoons in the Western media was a declaration of war and called upon Muslims to fight.

Barely one month ago, if anyone had predicted that the Netherlands would sooner get rid of the Dutch parliamentarian, “European of the Year” and vocal Islamic critics Ayaan Hirsi Ali than Norway of Mullah Krekar, few would have believed it. Apparently, in contemporary Europe it is easier to strip a member of parliament of her citizenship than it is to get a terrorist expelled.

The difference between Krekar and Hirsi Ali? He threatens the Norwegians with terror attacks if they throw him out, and she is kicked out because her enemies threaten the Dutch with terror attacks if she is allowed to stay.
